Many marine animals are nocturnal, so you'll see octopus undulating in neon colors while they hunt, colorful coral polyps appearing to bloom as they feed, and beady-eyed red night shrimp seemingly everywhere along the reef. There is also less boat traffic at night, allowing you to not only see the reef in a new way, but to truly hear the sounds of life under the sea. ## What Skills are Necessary for Night Diving? While there's no difference in your basic diving technique at night versus the day, you will require the use of a torch (underwater flashlight) and need to adapt how you perform underwater signals. Where, what and how you identify marine life will also change based upon the behavior of marine animals at night. If you've never done a night dive, we highly recommend that you do the Night Adventure dive or Night Diver Specialty to have the adequate theory and instructor insight to be a competent and confident Night Diver. ## Have you seen the String of Pearls? Perhaps most magical is the bioluminescence phenomenon unique to Roatan called the String of Pearls. Bioluminescence is the production of light by a living organism. Seen best when there is no moonlight, the String of Pearls fills the night's waters with an incredible light show that you can swim amongst as if floating through the stars. --- # Cruiseship Dive Excursions in Roatan URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/cruiseships/ ## A day you won't forget! "As a first time traveler to Roatan, it was overwhelming to decide which of the 80+ dive operators I wanted to spend my two weeks diving with. I had to balance remote work with diving so had a bit of a 'diva' approach to what would work best for my schedule. After extensive web research I sent the same email to my top 8 operators out of West End. Natalie at Sun Divers very clearly answered my questions, offered local knowledge and advice, and quite obviously had a great personality in her responses. I booked and it was the best decision I could have made! I spent every day over two weeks (26 dives) with the Sun Divers family. Yes, family! Everyone working there went out of their way to make me feel welcome, relaxed, included, and maximize my diving experiences. I've been diving for over 20 years and have had the privilege to experience operators globally. Sun Divers ranks #1 in my books by a large margin!" - Sam Cotterral ## What New Divers Say ### "Best of the Best Dive Shop" "Sun Divers is the best and what a difference a dive shop makes! As 73 year old novices, we were looking for a diving operation that would make us feel comfortable after discovering diving only a few years prior and not the most positive experience with the dive shop we went with. Sun Divers surpassed our expectations! Those 2 weeks with them were the highlight of our entire trip, our last few years, and a lifetime of wonderful adventures. As Roatan's first PADI Eco Center, we proudly support the PADI AWARE Blueprint for Ocean Action, driving real change through marine conservation, sustainable diving practices, and community partnerships. Our approach to sustainable marine tourism focuses on: - Measurably reducing our environmental impact as a marine tourism operator by conducting Green Fins' annual self-audits and implementing action plans - Emphasizing environmental practices in our company values, training, and education for both staff and guests - Supporting local conservation efforts through Dives Against Debris, coral restoration, beach cleanups, lionfish control and more - Partnering with local, regional and international NGOs including the Roatan Marine Park, Bay Islands Conservation Association, and Ilili Honduras ## Restore Roatan's Reefs Healthy reefs are vital to marine ecosystems, which is why we love training divers to help grow and transplant resilient coral species through the Roatan Marine Park's Coral Reef Restoration certification. Our divers get hands-on experience assisting with restoration projects. We support the Roatan Marine Park's annual Coral Spawn Watch by providing boat transportation, tanks, and volunteers. Data is collected about the reproductive cycles of specific coral species and gamete (sex cells) are fertilized in a lab setting to enhance success rates. ## Dive Against Debris As part of the PADI AWARE Adopt the Blue program, Sun Divers cares for the Candela Zen dive site. We conduct routine Dives Against Debris at the site and make that a focal point of how we celebrate Blue Friday, MesoAmerican Reef Day and Earth Day. Every month you can also join the Half Moon Beach and Bay cleanup, where volunteers remove trash pollution from the beach and conduct snorkels against debris in the bay. ## Bay Islands Conservation Association The Bay Islands Conservation Association (BICA) is an important co-manager of the Bay Islands National Marine Park. Sun Divers supports BICA by donating certifications to their staff from Open Water to Rescue Diver at no cost, with Sun Divers instructors volunteering their time. ## Petrochemical Sunscreen Ban Sunscreen chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate are harmful to coral reefs. That's why Sun Divers helped found the EcoSafe Sunscreen Coalition, an advocacy group working to make Roatan a petrochemical sunscreen-free destination. ## Eco Sustainability Practices Sun Divers has moved to online waivers to cut paper waste and offers reef-safe sunscreen, defog, and shampoo at our facilities. We use Stream2Sea products exclusively, including their Reef-Safe Gear Wash and solid shampoo bars. --- # Why Using Reef Safe Sunscreen in Roatan is a Must URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/reef-safe-sunscreen-roatan/ Using truly reef safe sunscreen is one of the easiest ways to protect the reef in Roatan. Climate change is the most detrimental man-made threat to our coral reefs, but eliminating the use of non-reef safe sunscreen is a simple action that everyone can take to reduce the toxic load on our precious marine ecosystem. ## The Petrochemical Problem Many skin care products including sunscreen contain petrochemicals, which can generate the known carcinogen 1,4-dioxane. In addition to being harmful to humans, they have catastrophic effects on coral and juvenile fish. For a sunscreen to be truly reef safe it should be both non-toxic and biodegradable. The FDA has only found two common sunscreen ingredients that could be classified as safe and effective: Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide. ## Sun Divers' Response After our own wild chase to track down reef-safe sunscreen in Roatan, we reached out to Stream2Sea to partner with us to provide our customers with a better sunscreen option. Stream2Sea's SPF 30 Sport Sunscreen, available at our dive center, has undergone rigorous independent testing to determine it is truly reef-friendly. The EcoSafe Zinc used by Stream2Sea is naturally-coated, USP grade and Cosmos certified. Sun Divers is a member of the EcoSafe Sunscreen Coalition urging the Municipality of Roatan to ban the sale and use of non-reef safe sunscreen. ## Where to Find Reef Safe Sunscreen in Roatan You can find truly reef safe sunscreen at Sun Divers Roatan and the Roatan Marine Park EcoStore in West End. ## What You Can Do - Use only mineral-based sunscreens or UV protection clothing and hats - Sign the petition supporting the petrochemical sunscreen ban - Share the petition with your community - If you own a business in Roatan, submit a letter of support --- # Certification Scholarships - ROA GIRLS DIVE! URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/roa-girls-dive/ ## Scuba Diving Scholarship Program Connecting with the ocean through scuba diving has the power to change lives. No one is more deserving of this connection than Roatan's girls. With the ocean literally in their backyard, many grow up never making it past the sand. ROA GIRLS DIVE is changing that. A partnership between Sun Divers, Roatan Peer Health Exchange and PADI, this scholarship program provides PADI Scuba Diving certifications to local girls and women in Roatan ranging from Open Water Diver all the way through Divemaster. ## Why Sponsor a Roatan Girl to Dive **Enriched Lives**: The mental, physical and emotional benefits of diving are many - and who better to reap those benefits than teenage girls dealing with the complexity that comes with growing up, especially girls who have spent their whole lives with the reef in their own backyard, but have yet to experience its beauty and power. **Environmental Stewards**: The girls that participate in the Roatan Peer Health Exchange program are poised to be our future leaders. Leaders who should be empowered to protect our fragile marine ecosystem through their own actions and decision making. **Professional Pathways**: Roatan women are significantly underrepresented in the local dive industry. We'd like to educate Roatan's girls on the professional paths they should consider for their future, as well as provide them with the necessary certifications needed to participate in local dive professional development programs such as the Roatan Marine Park's Protect Our Pride Program. Certifications can be sponsored through a GoFundMe campaign. --- # Lionfish Hunting in Roatan - Get Your License URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/course/lionfish-hunting-roatan/ Lionfish are an invasive species in the Caribbean that pose a significant threat to native fish species and reef ecosystems. Although the lionfish population has seen a decline in Roatan over the past few years, they remain a danger to native species and reef health. The Roatan Marine Park Lionfish Hunting workshop certifies divers to legally hunt lionfish in Roatan's waters. This provides a meaningful hands-on conservation action that combines an exciting dive experience with real ecological benefit. Lionfish are actively speared during dives, and those caught can be prepared for eating. Lionfish that are large enough can be taken home for consumption, making this one of the more immediately rewarding conservation activities available to visiting divers. Sun Divers offers this course as part of its broader commitment to reef protection and active conservation participation for guests. --- # Guide to the Ultimate Cayos Cochinos Tour from Roatan URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/cayos-cochinos-honduras/ ## The Perfect Roatan Day Trip to Paradise Cayos Cochinos, Honduras is located approximately 26 miles (42km) from Roatan. You can only reach Cayos Cochinos by boat, and the trip is best made when sea conditions are at their calmest. Cayos made Time Magazine's list of the World's Greatest Places. ## Your Cayos Cochinos Tour Itinerary Known also as the Hog Islands, Cayos Cochinos is made up of two main islands called Cayos Menor and Cayos Grande. The chain of islands also has 13 smaller uninhabited cays that are perfect for snorkeling. ### Dive One: The Roatan Seamounts About 30 minutes from Roatan, the seamounts emerge like hidden giants beneath the surface. These underwater mountains rise from the ocean floor to as shallow as 40 feet (12 meters) below. Their structure creates some of the most vibrant dive sites near Roatan and Cayos Cochinos. The seamounts are alive with color and movement. Nutrient-rich currents feed healthy coral reefs, making it a hotspot for marine life. Look out for flamingo tongue snails clinging to soft corals, schools of Atlantic spadefish, and sleek barracudas. ### Surface Interval: Welcome to Cayos Cochinos After the first dive, we cruise to the heart of Cayos Cochinos, a remote archipelago known for its unspoiled beauty. We check in at the Cayos Cochinos Visitors Center on Cayo Menor for photos of the white sand beaches, sunbathing iguanas, and seashells dotting the shoreline. ### Dive Two: Exploring the Outer Reef The second dive explores the reef systems around the Cayos Cochinos cays. The protected marine park status of the area means healthy coral formations and abundant marine life. ### Garifuna Village Lunch After diving, guests enjoy a traditional lunch prepared by the Garifuna fishing village community, including fresh-caught fish. --- # Dive the thrilling Mary's Place in Roatan URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/diving-marys-place-in-roatan/ ## The Most Popular Roatan Dive Site Mary's Place is almost synonymous with Roatan. This is the most famous dive site in Roatan, and with its intricate set of swimthroughs and humbling vertical drop offs, it easily earns its fame. ## Where is Mary's Place? Mary's Place Roatan is located on the southeast side of the island, very close to Barefoot Cay resort. Because it's on the southside, it can be subject to rough surface conditions for most of the year. Most dive operators, including Sun Divers, head to Mary's Place when prevailing winds shift from the north during what we call a "Southside Day." ## Why Mary's Place is So Iconic Mary's Place begins as an unassuming plateau at 30 feet / 10 meters. The corner of this plateau is separated from the rest of the reef by a fissure that reaches all the way down to 120 feet / 40 meters, likely created by an ancient earthquake caused by volcanic activity. ### Vertical Walls Descending down the walls of Mary's Place feels like the underwater equivalent of base jumping. The walls drop to 120 feet where they meet a sandy slope that goes beyond what the eyes can see. Along these walls you'll see deepwater sea fans and the occasional channel clinging crab. ### Swimthroughs As you make your way through the swimthroughs, you feel like you're in an underwater garden with lush green Hanging Vine algae cascading down overhangs and Bushy Black Coral. Vibrant Azure Vase Sponges and Giant Garrel Sponges protrude from the sides of the walls. Mangrove snappers and groupers guide you through the swimthroughs. ### The Plateau The shallow plateau is equally mesmerizing, with orange and purple Sea Rods and Sea Plumes dancing with the surge. Seahorse sightings are possible for those with a knowledgeable guide. **Additional cost**: $35 added to your standard dive package. Weather permitting. Minimum of 6 divers. --- # Roatan Wreck Diving: Odyssey and El Aguila Shipwrecks URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/roatan-diving/diving/roatan-wreck-diving/ ## Unveiling the Hidden Treasures of Roatan Wrecks Roatan's crystal clear waters hold treasure troves in the form of wreck dive sites. The two most iconic wreck dives are just a quick trip from Sun Divers and are frequently included in divers' itineraries. ## The Shipwreck El Aguila The shipwreck El Aguila is an impressive 210ft / 64m cargo vessel that was intentionally sunk in 1997 to create an artificial reef. This wreck is 110 feet underwater (33 meters), making it both a thrilling wreck dive and a deep dive. This legendary vessel first sunk on its journey from Puerto Cortes to Haiti while carrying loads of concrete. After attempts to salvage the ship were unsuccessful, it was intentionally partially sunk to avoid further damage. Hurricane Mitch later took a toll on the sunken freighter and it is now broken into three pieces, creating a unique ecosystem for scuba diving. The wreck is home to groupers patrolling along the bow, moray eels lurking in corners, and an intact mast teeming with sponges and macro life. After exploring El Aguila, divers head to a dramatic wall that rises behind it, full of beautiful swaying soft coral. ## The Shipwreck Odyssey The shipwreck Odyssey is one of the largest wrecks in all of the Caribbean at 300 feet from bow to stern (91 meters), resting at 110ft / 30.5m below the surface - considered an advanced dive. The collapsed cargo area is the length of a football field. It holds many untold stories within its decaying corridors and provides interesting swimthrough opportunities. Both wreck dives are accessible to Advanced Open Water divers or on a deep adventure dive. --- # Dive the Amazing Roatan Blue Channel URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/roatan-blue-channel/ The Roatan Blue Channel is one of the most popular Roatan dive sites thanks to its variety in wildlife and intriguing swimthroughs. We usually navigate this site on a relatively shallow dive profile under 40 feet / 12 meters, though it's best explored by divers with good buoyancy control due to the swimthroughs and sections with rapid depth changes. ## Location The Roatan Blue Channel dive site is located off West End on the Northside of the island, near the famous beach bar Tita's Pink Seahorse. The channel is not man made - it's a natural separation in the reef creating a large channel filled with an abundance of coral and fish life. ## What Makes Blue Channel Special Navigating from the outside in, you first experience an intricate chain of swimthroughs in the reef that lead you up the channel toward shore. You then traverse a green field of sea grass teeming with macro life. Finally you arrive in "the sand bowl" - an array of wildlife-filled seascape with a small sailboat wreck that tons of cool creatures call home. Schoolmaster Snappers and Black Margate appear to guide you through the tunnels. There are also a couple of openings where you can exit the swimthrough or simply use as beautiful lookout points. ## Marine Life - Elkhorn corals in the shallows - Spotted Goatfish and Smallmouth Grunts - Eagle Rays frequenting the site and soaring along the crest of the reef - Schools of Blue Tang and Parrot Fish cleaning the reef - Macro life in the turtle grass field ## Snorkeling at Blue Channel The Roatan Blue Channel is one of the best places to snorkel in Roatan thanks to how shallow the reef is. From the surface you can easily see an abundance of marine life. Sun Divers offers trips for both diving and snorkeling. --- # Dive the Mysterious Roatan Spooky Channel with Sun Divers! URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/diving-the-roatan-spooky-channel/ ## A Site Unlike Any Other Once an ancient waterfall on land, the Roatan Spooky Channel offers a unique combination of topography, swimthroughs, dramatic depth changes, and diverse marine life. Whether you're an experienced diver or a seasoned snorkeler, the Roatan Spooky Channel is a must-see site. ## Location The Spooky Channel dive site is on the north side of Roatan, located just off of Sandy Bay Beach, near Lawson Rock. You can access it from the Sunnyside dock. The reef naturally forms a large channel with dark overhangs, mysterious cracks, and fascinating crevices. ## How to Dive Spooky Channel Diving by boat with a guide is strongly recommended. This allows for easy drop-offs inside or outside the channel, and a local expert to determine if conditions are optimal. Start your dive at the shallow plateau, just 20 feet (6 meters) deep. The soft corals here sway with the current, providing an idyllic home for a wide variety of reef fish. Schools of Blue Tang and Parrot Fish cleaning the reef create an immersive and colorful experience. As you move closer to the channel, you encounter a labyrinth of swimthroughs and open-top channels. ## Marine Life Fish that thrive in the overhangs and narrow passages include glassy sweepers that create an ethereal, almost magical feel. The interplay of light filtering through the reef combined with the presence of these glimmering sweepers creates a truly unforgettable experience. Rays and turtles are possible sightings. ## Snorkeling at Spooky Channel Spooky Channel has a reputation for being an excellent place to snorkel in Roatan, though only when the channel is clear. The shallow plateau surrounding the channel makes it easy to view abundant marine life from the surface. Always carry a swim buoy to alert boaters and be wary of boat traffic. --- # Okay, so what is the String of Pearls?! URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2021/06/01/string-of-pearls-roatan/ So you just finished your first Roatan night dive and experienced the globally rare "string of pearls" phenomena. What you have seen can only be described as mind-altering and, possibly, life changing. Imagine yourself in complete darkness. Each flurry of movement sends "sparks" through the water. The light gives you the sense of racing through the universe surrounded by a galaxy of stars. Then the magic happens: your eyes begin to focus on the strings of sparkling lines of brilliant green lights that flash in concert throughout the water. ## The Scientific Explanation The real story behind the "String of Pearls" starts with a microscopic crustacean called Ostracods. These tiny creatures emerge from the depth about an hour after sunset to begin their bioluminescent courting ritual, which consists of males excreting strings of bioluminescent mucus - all in the name of love. Each of the strings produces an intricate series of vertically progressing flashes to attract non-luminescent females of the same species. The displays typically consist of nine to 13 pulses: three bright, longer pulses followed by six to ten dimmer, quick pulses. The length of each train of displays is typically 50 to 70 centimeters, with each pulse lasting a second or less. ## How to See the String of Pearls Every night dive will be a thrilling adventure, but glance at the moon stages. If you happen to be on the island when there is a new moon, you are more likely to experience this phenomenon at its best. The absence of moonlight allows the ostracod displays to be most visible. The String of Pearls is a phenomenon unique to Roatan and is one of the most remarkable experiences available on a night dive anywhere in the world. --- # How to Decide if You Need a Wetsuit To Dive in Roatan URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2024/03/04/need-a-wetsuit-to-dive-in-roatan/ Water temperature in Roatan varies by season, which affects what thermal protection divers need. ## Water Temperature by Season **Summer (June-October)**: Water temperatures typically range from 82-84°F / 28-29°C. Most divers are comfortable in a 1-2mm shorty or skin suit, or nothing at all. **Winter (November-May)**: Water temperatures can drop to 76-78°F / 24-26°C, especially during cold fronts in January and February. A 3mm full wetsuit is comfortable for most divers, and some prefer a 5mm. ## Factors That Affect Your Comfort - **Personal cold sensitivity**: Some divers run warm and prefer minimal protection, while others feel cold easily and benefit from thicker suits. - **Depth**: Deeper dives expose you to cooler water temperatures, even in summer. - **Number of dives per day**: Consecutive dives can leave you feeling colder with each dive. - **Dive duration**: Longer dives mean more heat loss. ## General Recommendations For most of the year in Roatan, a 3mm wetsuit provides good all-around protection. During peak summer months, many divers are comfortable in a 1-2mm suit or lycra. During winter cold fronts, a 5mm suit may be preferred by those who feel cold easily. Sun Divers provides Scubapro rental wetsuits in various thicknesses to accommodate different comfort levels and seasons. --- # Best Dive Sites in Roatan - Top 10 List URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2022/07/13/best-dive-sites-in-roatan/ When people come to dive on our island for the first time, the question is always the same: What are the must-see, best dive sites in Roatan, Honduras? Each person provided their Top Ten list and rankings were weighted based upon how often a site was selected and where it sat in the ranking. ## What is Special About Roatan Diving? Roatan is a 40-mile-long island, and the entire coastline (over 80 miles) is surrounded by reef. Unlike many dive destinations that have limited sites to select from, Roatan presents a highly diverse selection of experiences: sheer walls, expansive plateaus, exciting drifts, spectacular wrecks, expansive swimthroughs, captivating macro, out-of-this-world night dives, and deep technical options - all engulfed in life and color. ## The Top 10 Best Dive Sites in Roatan **#1 - Texas and Pablos**: The team's consensus top site, combining dramatic topography with exceptional marine life encounters. **#2 - Hole in the Wall**: A memorable dive known for its unique formation and diverse marine life. **#3 - Mary's Place**: The most famous dive site in Roatan, featuring iconic swimthroughs and vertical walls dropping to 120 feet. **#4 - Blue Channel**: A complex site with intricate swimthroughs, turtle grass fields, and the "sand bowl" feature. **#5 - West End Wall**: A classic Roatan wall dive with dramatic topography and consistent marine life. **#6 - Sea Quest Deep**: Home to the Roatan Marine Park's coral nursery and excellent conditions for a variety of experience levels. **#7 - Mandy's Eel Garden**: A particularly friendly site for new divers and those wanting calm, marine-rich conditions. **#8 - Rockstar**: A favorite for its topography and the variety of marine life encounters. **#9 - Half Moon Bay Wall**: A convenient, accessible wall dive with consistent quality. **#10 - Seamounts**: Located 18 miles offshore, the seamounts are known for spectacular coral formations and large schools of fish. **Honorable Mentions**: El Aguila wreck, Odyssey wreck, Spooky Channel, and Chief's Quarters. --- # Sun Divers - Roatan Shark Dive URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2022/08/30/what-to-know-about-the-roatan-shark-dive/ There are more than 500 species of sharks swimming in the oceans. When you dive Roatan, Honduras, you have a chance of seeing at least 10 shark species such as hammerheads, nurse sharks, and silky sharks. Shark sightings on dives in Roatan are occasional at best. If you want an (almost) guaranteed encounter with sharks, then you want to do the Roatan Shark Dive. ## About the Roatan Shark Dive The Roatan Shark Dive gets you up close with the impressive Caribbean Reef Shark. The sharks you see are almost always female, seen in groups of five to 20, and average in size from five to seven feet long. ### Key Facts **It's run by a third-party operator**: When you sign up to do the Roatan Shark Dive, you are NOT diving with Sun Divers. The dive experience is operated in Coxen Hole on the southside of the island and has operated the dive for 22 years. The shark dive partners with dive centers like us to recruit divers, provide transportation and equipment if needed, and collect payment. **The sharks are provisioned (fed)**: The sharks are fed fish heads and bones left over from fish processing plants. These are put in a bucket with holes to attract the shark and then fed to the sharks as a "snack" at the end. There is much debate about the ethics of provisioning. Local word is that the sharks have been coming to the location of the shark dive for as long as can be remembered. **Requirements**: Max depth is 70 feet, so divers must be 14 years of age or older and have their Advanced Open Water certification or Deep Adventure Dive training record. **Price**: $120 / 2 person minimum --- # Restaurants in Roatan - Top 10 in West End URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2022/12/06/top-10-restaurants-in-roatan-west-end/ West End, Roatan is home to a diverse and vibrant dining scene that has grown significantly alongside the island's tourism industry. This guide covers the top 10 restaurants in West End, Roatan, based on food quality, atmosphere, and consistency. The West End dining scene spans Caribbean seafood, international cuisine, and local Honduran cooking. Most restaurants are within walking distance of the dive shops and accommodations in the area, making it easy for dive visitors to explore the local food culture between dives. Sun Divers recommends a variety of dining options near our beachfront location, including the on-site Sundowners Bar and Grill - a famous beach bar known for its vibrant atmosphere, sunsets, and casual dining. The Mila del Mar restaurant at The Beach House Hotel is also recommended, particularly for Dive and Stay package guests who receive grab-and-go breakfast there during peak season. --- # Whale Sharks in Roatan - Want to Know Your Chances? URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2023/07/13/can-you-dive-with-whale-sharks-in-roatan-honduras/ Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean and one of the most sought-after encounters for divers worldwide. While Roatan is not a guaranteed whale shark destination, sightings do occur in the waters around the Bay Islands. ## When Are Whale Sharks Seen in Roatan? Whale shark sightings in Roatan are more common during certain seasons, particularly when water temperatures are warmer and nutrient-rich currents bring baitfish closer to the surface. The open water around Roatan and the outer seamounts provides the most likely opportunity for encounters. ## How to Maximize Your Chances - Dive the outer seamounts and open water sites - Time your visit with seasonal whale shark aggregations - Book with a dive operator that has deep local knowledge and can quickly redirect to sightings ## Realistic Expectations While sightings do occur, they cannot be guaranteed. Divers who specifically want a whale shark encounter may have better odds at dedicated whale shark destinations in neighboring Honduras such as around Utila, where sightings are more predictable. Sun Divers monitors and shares information about whale shark sightings with guests when they occur in local waters. --- # When is the Best Time to Dive in Roatan? URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2023/06/19/when-is-the-best-time-to-dive-in-roatan/ You probably think of Roatan as a great destination to escape the cold during snowy winters. But if you're coming here for the best diving experience possible, the summer is the best time to dive in Roatan. ## Summer is the Best Time to Dive in Roatan Many great dive sites, including most of our favorite spots, are on the west end of Roatan along the northern shore. The key to good diving conditions is calm and clear waters. On the Northside, conditions can remain calm even when the predominant eastern winds blow, allowing for great visibility and easy navigation. Weather expert Mike Andrews, who updates weather reports on a daily basis for islanders and tourists, says: "The greatest conditions for diving are during the summer when the island is mostly free from cold fronts and from wind patterns that can disrupt the waters." Low winds and calm seas during the summer also give us more opportunities to explore remote dive sites on Roatan's east end and make day trips to the outer islands like Cayos Cochinos possible. An extra bonus is that the summer is considered "low season" on the island, meaning fewer people and usually lower rates on accommodations and flights. ## Year-round Diving in Roatan The winter months from December to February are the busiest time on the island. During the winter, Roatan can experience periods of strong northern winds up to 35mph / 56kmh that push against the Northside of the island. This can lead to murkier and choppier waters on the Northside. When weather affects conditions on the Northside, we opt to dive on the Southside through what we call "Southside Days." The bottom line is that even if summer is the best time to dive in Roatan, you can find great diving year-round. Here is a seasonal overview: - **December-February (High Season)**: Busy period, potential for northern wind events and cold fronts, visibility can be affected but diving is still excellent. Best for those who prefer cooler water temperatures. - **March-May (Shoulder Season)**: Conditions begin to improve, good visibility, moderate tourist numbers. - **June-October (Summer/Low Season)**: Best diving conditions, calm seas, maximum visibility, lowest prices. Best for Cayos Cochinos day trips. - **November (Shoulder Season)**: Transition period, generally good conditions. --- # How to Find the Best Dive Shop in Roatan for You! URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2024/01/23/best-dive-shops-in-roatan/ With more than 50 dive operators on Roatan, choosing the right one takes some research. Here's what to look for and how to evaluate your options. ## Key Criteria for Evaluating Roatan Dive Shops **Safety Standards**: Look for PADI or SSI affiliation, which provides baseline accountability. But ask what additional standards the shop applies beyond the minimum. The safest dive shops treat standards as the starting line, not the finish line. **Group Sizes**: Smaller groups mean more personalized attention and safer diving. Look for shops that cap groups at 6 divers per guide or fewer. **Instructor Qualifications**: Credentials are the baseline. A truly safe instructor conducts real skill reviews, stays present and focused on guests, and doesn't juggle too many divers at once. **Equipment Quality**: Don't be shy about looking at the gear room. Regulators shouldn't look corroded. BCDs shouldn't leak. Tanks should have visible inspection stickers. **Boat Operations**: Professional captains and crew are as important as your instructor. Look for clear briefings, safety practices, and thoughtful planning. **Site Selection**: A safe dive shop prioritizes the right site for the conditions and the group, not just the most impressive site. Flexibility grounded in safety is a strong indicator of quality. **Conservation Practices**: Does the shop actively protect the reef or simply claim to? Look for evidence of real conservation action: memberships, partnerships, programs, certifications. **Reviews**: TripAdvisor, Google, and Facebook travel groups for Roatan are reliable sources of guest feedback. Look for consistency across many reviews over time. ## Why Sun Divers Sun Divers is Roatan's first PADI Eco Center and a PADI Five-Star Dive Center. Groups are capped at 6 divers per guide with a 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio. Equipment is top-of-the-line Scubapro. Conservation is embedded in daily operations, not an afterthought. The business has earned TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice awards for eight years since 2013. --- # Beginner Divers in Roatan: Tips and What to Expect URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2026/02/10/is-roatan-good-for-beginner-divers-tips-for-first-timers/ Roatan is widely considered one of the most approachable destinations for beginner scuba diving. You'll find calm conditions, warm waters, and clear visibility making the experience for first-time divers relatively easy compared to other destinations. ## Why Roatan is Great for Beginners The island is protected by a fringing reef that creates calm water diving in the Caribbean, with minimal current and excellent visibility year-round. Roatan dive conditions typically feature warm water (78-84 degrees Fahrenheit / 25-29 degrees Celsius) and excellent visibility (often 60-100 feet). Many operators describe themselves as "eco-friendly dive operators," but without accountability, the term can be vague. A PADI Eco Center must demonstrate ongoing efforts that support real conservation. The difference between greenwashing and real conservation is action. At a PADI Eco Center, conservation is not an optional add-on. It is integrated into how diving is conducted every day. These practices help reduce cumulative damage to reefs and support healthier ecosystems over time. ## What PADI Eco Centers Do - Conduct annual self-audits through the Green Fins framework - Implement action plans to measurably reduce environmental impact - Emphasize environmental practices in company values, staff training, and guest education - Support local conservation efforts through Dives Against Debris, coral restoration, beach cleanups, and lionfish control - Partner with local, regional, and international NGOs - Offer guests opportunities to participate directly in reef protection diving PADI Eco Centers place strong emphasis on education, not just certification. Divers are taught how to minimize their impact. For many guests, this is their first exposure to sustainable scuba diving, and it often changes how they dive long after their vacation ends. ## Why It Matters for Roatan Roatan is one of the Caribbean's most popular dive destinations. Its reefs support tourism, local livelihoods, and marine biodiversity. Choosing an eco dive center in Roatan helps ensure tourism supports conservation instead of contributing to reef decline. ## Sun Divers as Roatan's First PADI Eco Center When PADI approached Sun Divers about becoming a PADI Eco Center, it was the greatest affirmation that our mission and vision were exactly what they were supposed to be. Becoming Roatan's first PADI Eco Center was not about changing who we are. It was about highlighting the already existing values and practices that people could expect when diving or working with us. Sun Divers' eco activities include: supporting coral restoration through the Roatan Marine Park, Dives Against Debris at Candela Zen dive site, monthly beach and bay cleanups, participating in coral spawning monitoring, operating the ROA Girls Dive scholarship program, and co-founding Roatan's EcoSafe Sunscreen Coalition. --- # Here's Why Roatan's One of the Best Scuba Diving Destinations URL: https://sundiversroatan.com/2026/02/02/best-scuba-diving-destinations-in-the-world-roatan/ Ask ten divers to name the best scuba diving Caribbean destinations, and Roatan will come up again and again.
