Don’t Miss this Epic Roatan Dive
Diving the Spooky Channel in Roatan, Honduras can be sometimes eerie, but always thrilling!
This site offers a unique combination of topography, swim-throughs, dramatic depth changes, and diverse marine life. So whether you’re an experienced diver or a seasoned snorkeler, you don’t want to miss the Roatan Spooky Channel during your travels in Roatan.
What Makes the Roatan Spooky Channel Special?

You’ll find the Spooky Channel dive site on the north side of Roatan. It is located just off of the Sandy Bay Beach, near Lawson Rock, and you can access it from the Sunnyside dock.
The reef naturally forms a large channel with dark overhangs, mysterious cracks, and fascinating crevices — perfect for exploration. The Spooky Channel dive site gets its name from the area’s eerie topography, combined with the striking play of light and shadow.
Similar to the Roatan Blue Channel, visibility at this site is highly subject to tides and current. This makes its spot on Roatan’s best dive sites up for major debate. While it didn’t make our list of the Top 10 Best Dive Sites in Roatan, it did get an honorable mention and is still one of the island’s most famous dive sites.
That’s also why we recommend divers choose to explore this famous Roatan dive site by boat and with a guide. This allows for easy drop-offs inside or outside the channel, and a local expert to determine if conditions are optimal.
While it’s theoretically possible to access Spooky Channel from shore, it would consume a lot of air and limit your dive time. Because of boat traffic, avoid surface swimming here. Boat diving is the safest and most enjoyable way to experience this exceptional site.
Spooky Channel Highlights
The Plateau
Start your dive at the shallow plateau, just 20 feet (6 meters) deep. The soft corals here sway with the current, providing an idyllic home for a wide variety of reef fish. You’ll often spot large schools of Blue Tang and Parrot Fish cleaning the reef, making for an immersive and colorful experience.
Swim-Throughs & Sandbowl
As you move closer to the channel, you’ll encounter a labyrinth of swim-throughs and open-top channels. These pathways guide you into the sandbowl, the outer section of the channel. Depths drop from 25 feet / 7 meters to 50 feet / 15 meters here. Be cautious, as some swim-throughs don’t have exits. And thus, following your divemaster closely is important to ensure everyone’s safety,

The Channel
As you enter the channel, sheer reef walls will surround you, rising all the way to the surface in some areas. Dramatic overhangs cast eerie shadows, creating the “spooky” atmosphere the site is famous for. This jaw-dropping topography is reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral, and depths in this area drop to 90 feet / 27 meters.
Bring a torch to explore the dark crevices where aquatic life often hides, from Large Eye Toadfish to Spotted Scorpion Fish.
The Wall
After exploring the channel, you’ll make your way to the dramatic wall that plunges to 110 feet / 34 meters. Beyond that, the bottom drops into depths well past recreational dive limits (over 140 feet / 42 meters). Here, you’ll find abundant marine life, from Black Grouper and Barracuda to Creole Wrasse swarming along the wall. If there are Lionfish hunters in the group, the overhangs are ideal for spotting these invasive species—but keep an eye out for Snapper lurking in the shadows!
Marine Life at Spooky Channel

Spooky Channel is a vibrant haven for a wide variety of marine life. Among the cracks, crevices, and coral formations, you’ll often encounter the elusive Large Eye Toadfish and the well-camouflaged Spotted Scorpion Fish — both masters of disguise. Black Grouper, Barracuda, and schools of Creole Wrasse frequently patrol the reef walls and channels. This fish life ads bursts of movement and color to the scene. If you’re fortunate, you may spot larger pelagic visitors like Spotted Eagle Rays gliding gracefully through the blue. You can also encounter Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles as they cruise along the wall exploring the plateau’s edges.
As you venture deeper into the caverns and swim-throughs, keep an eye out for glassy sweepers, small silvery fish that shimmer in the dim light as they cluster in tight schools. These fish thrive in the overhangs and narrow passages, adding an ethereal, almost magical feel to an already mysterious dive. The interplay of light filtering through the reef, combined with the presence of these glimmering sweepers, creates a truly unforgettable underwater experience. Every turn in the Roatan Spooky Channel reveals new life, making it a site that rewards both careful observation and adventurous exploration.
Snorkeling Spooky Channel
