Work exchange programs are an incredible way to explore new places on a budget. The Sun Divers Work Exchange program is the best budget-friendly way to cover your diving costs while visiting Roatan or backpacking through Central America. Our dive shop will give you built in community to help you navigate life on Roatan. When volunteering with us, you’ll meet and expand your circle of like-minded people who love exploring the world and experiencing new places by connecting with nature. And you’ll gain valuable exposure to the travel tourism, hospitality and diving industries.
How Our Volunteer Work Exchange Program Works
In exchange for a helping hand around our dive shop you receive a credit that can be applied to fun diving, equipment rental and courses.
Each day that you volunteer with us you’ll receive a credit equal to the cost of 1 dive plus equipment (see our price list here). Our program does not including housing or meals, but we can help you with your housing search.
The credit you receive through our volunteer work exchange program can be applied to the following:
- Fun Dives
- Refresher Dive
- Night Dives
- PADI Courses: Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Emergency First Responder, Enrich Air (Nitrox) Diver and Specialties.
- Equipment
Volunteer credit cannot be applied to the following:
- Divemaster Certification
- Merchandise
- The Roatan Shark Dive
- Special Day Trips

A Day in the Life of a Volunteer
Volunteers become honorary members of our team! and get to volunteer alongside our instructors, shop team and captains. Your primary responsibilities will be assisting with the loading and unloading of boats and filling air tanks. You’ll also be helping with preparing coffee and fruit for our divers, as well as tidying up the shop.
There is plenty of downtime throughout the day. You can use this time to complete the reading and video requirements for your PADI courses. And of course, you’ll hang out with our incredible community of divers – and the shop kitty cat, AC!
When you’re not volunteering you can sign up for fun dives and courses. When you fun dive, you’re treated with the same concierge service that all of our customers receive. We assemble and disassemble your gear for you on every dive. And we’re sure to take you to all of Roatan’s best dive sites.
Volunteers can also put the credit they earn toward PADI Courses including Open Water, Advanced Open Water, EFR / Rescue Diver and Specialty Courses. Check out which PADI courses you want to do!
You’ll also get insider’s knowledge on the best things to do in Roatan from our team. And we hope you’ll join us for the things we love to do together outside of work such as music trivia night at the local beach bar, karaoke night and sunset happy hours spent floating and chilling in the bay.

Our volunteer work exchange program is a great fit for anyone who is spending an extended time visiting Roatan and wants to dive on a budget. Most of our volunteers fit one of the following categories:
- Backpackers traveling through Central and South America
- College Students looking for a different way to spend their summer
- Recent college graduates travelling abroad before starting their careers
- Retirees on an extended vacation in Roatan who are looking for community
As a volunteer, you will be lifting tanks and gear into boats and so there is a physical requirement to keep in mind.
