Can You Dive With Whale Sharks in Roatan?

A whale shark that was spotted during a dive in Roatán, Honduras.

Roatan is famous for its vibrant reefs and easy diving. But what about whale sharks in Roatan? If you’re hoping to spot these gentle giants while diving in the Bay Islands, here’s the real scoop on Roatan whale sharks, whale shark season in Roatan, and where to find whale sharks in Honduras.

Many articles on the internet will tell you that you can find whale sharks in Roatan. But in our experience, the answer isn’t quite that simple. So we are on the quest to uncover the truth about if you can dive with whale sharks in Roatan with the help of Gabriela Ochoa. She is a local marine biologist, who founded the Honduran marine conservation nonprofit Ilili.

Are There Whale Sharks in Roatan?

Short answer: yes—but sightings of whale sharks in Roatan are extremely rare. While these gentle giants do occasionally pass through these waters, Roatan island isn’t known as a reliable destination for whale shark encounters.

Gabriela explains the chances of spotting a whale shark in Roatan are “once in a blue moon.”

Sea Lucas LLC, which has developed an interactive map for shark sighting in Roatan and the Bay Islands, reports only 22 reported whale shark sightings in Roatan from 2007 – 2025. While numbers reported have increased in the past two years, that is likely due to more engagement in citizen science and reporting. To date, this is the most accurate source of data on Whale Sharks in RoatanWhale sharks in Utila are considered easier to see – but even they have only had 12 reported sightings in the same time frame

The most common way for us to spot a whale shark in Honduras is usually from the boat offshore. This means that encounters are very unpredictable and far out in the ocean. For this reason, most encounters end up being snorkel ones.

If your dream is to dive or snorkel with whale sharks, you’ll want to understand how whale sharks in Honduras migrate and where your chances are highest.

Roatan Whale Shark Season: When Do They Appear?

There’s no clearly defined Roatan whale shark season, which is part of why sightings are unpredictable. Unlike other global hotspots, whale sharks Roatan season doesn’t follow a reliable annual pattern.

Whale sharks are migratory creatures, traveling vast distances in the search of food and suitable breeding grounds. The presence in any given area is directly influenced by factors such as ocean currents, food availability, and migration routes. Contrary to common belief, whale sharks are not vegetarian and feed on zooplankton as well

They have been observed to follow spawning aggregations (a.k.a. mating sessions) of fish. Some bigger fish populations such as snappers are usually spawning during a certain season. Because of this, whale shark season in Roatan could be considered unofficially as December thru March.

With that said, July 2024 and 2025 were hot months for whale shark sightings. So you just never know when, where or why you might cross paths with these gentle giants.

Why Are Whale Sharks Rare in Roatan?

While Roatan offers incredible reef diving year-round, it lacks the specific conditions that attract large numbers of whale sharks. Whale sharks in Honduras have been driven by the occurrence of what fishermen call “tuna boils” – opportunistic events where large schools of tuna hunt baitfish near the service, attracting even larger animals. Otherwise, Roatan simply isn’t a primary feeding zone.

Can You Dive With Whale Sharks in Roatan?

It’s possible, but very unlikely that you will be able to dive with whale sharks in Roatan. Most encounters with Roatan whale sharks are spontaneous and rare, rather than something you can plan a trip around.

If swimming with whale sharks is high on your bucket list, your best bet is to plan a trip to areas known for whale shark migration such as Islas Mujeres in Mexico, Galapagos and Asia.

While the desire to dive with whale sharks is understandable, it is vital to prioritize their natural patterns and habitats. As migratory species, these magnificent creatures require protection and conservation efforts to ensure their survival and to avoid any disturbance that may disrupt their delicate ecosystem. Contribute to Citizen Science!

Monitoring and mapping of marine animals such as eagle rays and sharks is an important aspect of conservation. For this reason, it is helpful if you take pictures and report your sightings. “There is a lot of power in citizen science. Just contributing a picture can go a long way and has a great positive impact,” Gabriela said. Check out our guide on how to help with conservation.

The Bottom Line on Whale Sharks in Roatan

Roatan delivers world-class diving, but when it comes to whale sharks in Roatan, sightings are the exception, not the rule.

But the island still offers an array of other captivating marine life encounters. As you explore Roatan reef sites, be prepared to experience a breathtaking variety of wildlife. In Roatan, divers are lucky to frequently encounter turtles, rays, and even some large marine mammals such as dolphins and pilot whales. There is rarely a ‘Turtle Tuesday’ in Roatan where a turtle isn’t showing its face. Of course, there is always an element of surprise and we can never guarantee the sight of specific wildlife while diving.
